The tiny little virus has created panic across the world and has even claimed the lives of many. Most of the countries have been locked down as this is the best way to stay away from the corona infection. Although many of us are safe and happy at homes, the ones who are badly hit by the lockdown, rather than corona are the poor. In hard times where they are left jobless and in hunger, the Corona Warriors become a silver lining to each of them.
Who the Corona Warriors are:
The lockdown in India was a bigger panic that the pandemic that was being spread across the globe. The lives of a million daily wage workers were at threat. The government and other organisations began planning on securing their lives and also wanted to make sure fake information are not spread around and verify the authenticity, thus came the idea of Corona Warriors. P Manivannan – The Secretary of Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) along with Indian Red Cross came together and called out for Interested volunteers who could join in and work for the society, spread awareness, educate people on social distancing. Today, over 5000-10,000 volunteers have registered themselves and they are called the Corona Warriors. Every Corona Warrior is issued an ID card, a safety kit, and the responsibility of working for the betterment of all living beings along with the Police from their respective police station Limits.
How Corona Warriors Function:
When the registrations happened across many places, volunteers where shortlisted and selected and were given training(offline/online). Today, the Corona Warriors are divided into teams and each team works closely with the police station limits that they are assigned to. They along with the CDP In-charge (Civil Defence Personnel) work on educating people about the COVID-19 infection. The Corona Warrior team in the photographs that you see is a team that works with the Konankunte Police Station Limit.
What Corona Warriors Do:
Each of the volunteers from the team of Corona Warriors works closely with the police and stays connected to the people in need. When the police station receives a buzz from the slums and other downtrodden places across its limits, the assigned cops along with the Corona Warriors reach the spot immediately and provide amenities such as food and grocery kits to the families out there. They serve cooked meals – all breakfast, lunch and dinner, to curb hunger. The Konanakunte Corona Warriors provide food to the crowd at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital and Sanjay Gandhi Hospital too. They educate the mass about the benefits of wearing gloves and masks, using sanitizers and maintain social distancing during shopping. Personal visits to slums are made by the team to make sure that no one is effected during the battle against Corona.
That Is Not Over:
Along with taking care of the public, the Corona Warriors cook food for over 2,000 dogs across the city of Bengaluru. They have set-up a centralised in BTM layout co-ordinated by Mrs.Manjari Colaco, where food gets cooked and volunteers pick it up. When we speak to the Corona Warriors of Konanakunte, we see a spark of joy and responsibility in their eyes. The team also says that they are thankful for the support extended by the cops of Konanakunte Police Station Limits – Inspector Dharmendra, Sub-inspector Srinivas Prasad and Sub-inspector Venkateshaiah. Well, Corona has brought in tough times but we have mightier warriors dealing with it.
